Alcester Road

Moseley, Birmingham · B13

Alcester Road is one of Birmingham's main arterial routes running through Moseley. It carries heavy traffic throughout the day and features complex junctions at Camp Hill and the Kings Heath boundary. The road transitions from 30mph zones through mixed residential and commercial zones.

Many learners struggle with the busy bus lanes, the sharp junction at Moseley Road, and the variable speed limits. Emerging into fast-moving traffic from side roads catches many new drivers off guard.

🚗 Sparkbrook

Stratford Road

Sparkbrook to Shirley · B11–B90

Stratford Road is one of Birmingham's longest classified roads, stretching from Sparkbrook all the way south to Shirley and the Solihull boundary. It's a designated A34 route carrying some of the highest traffic volumes in the city. The road features pedestrian crossings, bus stops, and multiple traffic light controlled junctions.

Learners consistently report difficulty with the dual carriageway sections, lane discipline near the Highgate Middleway junction, and the busy crossings near Tyseley. Speed management when following buses is another common challenge.

🚗 Edgbaston

Hagley Road

Edgbaston, Birmingham · B16–B17

Hagley Road (A456) is a major dual carriageway running from Five Ways roundabout westward through Edgbaston and Harborne toward the West Midlands boundary. It features 4 lanes of traffic, fast-moving vehicles, and complex slip roads. It forms part of many test routes from Kings Heath and Wyndley test centres.

The four-lane section between Five Ways and Harborne Road is notoriously difficult for learners. Changing lanes safely in fast-moving traffic while watching mirrors and maintaining speed is a skill that takes considerable practice. Several learners report failing tests here for not checking mirrors adequately before lane changes.

🚗 Selly Oak

Bristol Road

Selly Oak to Northfield · B29–B31

Bristol Road (A38) is one of Birmingham's most famous routes — a long dual carriageway linking the city centre to the south of Birmingham and beyond toward Bromsgrove. It passes through Selly Oak, the University of Birmingham campus, Northfield and onto the Rubery Bypass. Heavy student traffic and bus services add complexity.

The University of Birmingham section is particularly tricky — students crossing at unmarked points, cycling traffic, and the complex junction at Oak Tree Lane. Learners on the B31 section often struggle with the 40mph dual carriageway section and the slip roads to Bell Lane.

🚗 Sheldon

Coventry Road

Small Heath to Sheldon · B10–B26

Coventry Road (A45) is one of the most important arterial routes in Birmingham, connecting the city centre to Sheldon, Birmingham Airport and the M42. It features three distinct sections with varying speed limits, multiple large roundabouts, and a dual carriageway approaching Heybarnes Circus — which forms part of the Garretts Green test routes.

The approach to Heybarnes Circus is a test-day nightmare for many learners. Multiple lanes, fast-moving traffic, and complex give-way markings catch many candidates out. The section near Small Heath also features trams and heavy bus traffic that demands constant awareness.

🚗 Perry Barr

Walsall Road / Perry Barr

Perry Barr, Birmingham · B42

Walsall Road through Perry Barr is one of Birmingham's busiest north-south corridors and forms part of many Kingstanding test centre routes. It features Perry Barr Expressway approaches, the One Stop Shopping Centre roundabout system, and multiple bus-heavy junctions. The road passes under the M6 at Perry Barr, creating an urban motorway feel.

The Perry Barr one-way system and the roundabout complex near One Stop Shopping Centre is frequently cited as one of the most difficult sequences for learners in Birmingham. Complex lane markings and multiple exits at high speed trip up even confident drivers. The M6 underpass section surprises learners with its speed and scale.

🚗 City Centre

Broad Street

Ladywood / City Centre · B1

Broad Street is Birmingham's famous entertainment district and also one of its most complex roads for learner drivers. It features the Five Ways roundabout at one end — one of the UK's most complex junction systems — and connects through to Brindleyplace and the city centre. The road is classified and carries significant traffic including trams, taxis, and buses.

Five Ways roundabout is arguably Birmingham's hardest challenge for new drivers. Five arms converge at a complex multi-lane roundabout with variable signalling. Many test candidates from Kings Heath centre encounter this junction and preparation is absolutely essential. Bus-only lanes and complex markings add further difficulty.

🚗 Edgbaston

Pershore Road

Edgbaston to Kings Norton · B5–B30

Pershore Road (A441) runs from the Belgrave Middleway in Edgbaston southward through Cotteridge and toward Kings Norton. It's a heavily trafficked route with bus lanes, complex crossings near Bournville, and sharp junctions at Hazelwell Street and Watford Road. The road serves as a key test route from Kings Heath DVSA centre.

The Cotteridge section of Pershore Road causes particular difficulty — a 30mph zone with variable traffic flow, pedestrian crossings, and the tight left turn at Watford Road. Many learners report struggles with bus lane identification and the school-zone hazards near Cotteridge Park.

🚗 Stockland Green

Gravelly Hill / Aston Expressway

Gravelly Hill is infamous as the approach to the Gravelly Hill Interchange — nicknamed Spaghetti Junction — the most complex motorway junction in the UK. The surrounding local roads including Gravelly Hill Road, Marsh Hill, and the Aston Expressway are heavily used and feature fast moving traffic. The entire area around here forms part of advanced post-test routes.

Even experienced drivers find the Gravelly Hill area confusing. For learners practising Erdington test routes, the Stockland Green junctions near Summer Road and the approaches to Slade Road can cause serious anxiety. High speed, complex signage, and multiple slip roads demand constant observation.
